Ireland has seen a significant influx of foreign workers in the first half of 2023, with the issuance of over 18,000 work permits. This marks a considerable increase in the number of employment permits compared to previous years. Let’s delve into the details of this development.

In the first seven months of 2023, Ireland issued a total of 18,367 employment permits, a noteworthy figure that highlights the nation’s openness to welcoming foreign talent. Among the recipients of these permits, Indians emerged as one of the largest groups, receiving 6,868 work permits across various industries.

These employment permits were predominantly distributed across several sectors, reflecting the diverse employment opportunities available in Ireland. The major industries that witnessed significant permit issuances include health and social work activities, information and communication activities, accommodation and food services, financial and insurance activities, agriculture, forestry, and fishing.

One of the pivotal changes in Ireland’s immigration policies is the revision of the Atypical Working Scheme (AWS). The AWS is a program designed for non-EEA nationals seeking short-term contract-based employment in Ireland, particularly aimed at highly skilled and specialized individuals. The Atypical Working Scheme is jointly managed by the Irish Naturalisation and Immigration Service (INIS) and the Employment Permits Section of the Department of Business, Enterprise, and Innovation.

Effective from January 1, 2023, the AWS has undergone significant changes to streamline and enhance the program:

1) Increase in Salary Threshold:

The most notable change is the increase in the salary threshold. To align with the standards of the General Employment Permit, employers looking to hire workers through the Atypical Working Scheme must now offer a minimum salary of over €30,000. This change aims to ensure that foreign workers are compensated fairly for their contributions.

2) Reduced Waiting Time:

The waiting time for obtaining permission via the Atypical Working Scheme has been reduced to 90 days. This means that individuals can now travel to and from Ireland for a maximum of 90 days within a six-month period, providing greater flexibility for temporary work assignments.

3) Reduced Permission Time:

The time required to obtain permission to apply for a new AWS has been significantly shortened. It has been revised from a 12-month timeframe to just one month. This alteration is expected to expedite the hiring process for both employers and employees.

These changes not only make Ireland a more attractive destination for foreign workers but also streamline the administrative processes associated with hiring non-EEA nationals. The increased salary threshold ensures that workers are fairly compensated, while the reduced waiting and permission times simplify the logistics of temporary work assignments.

In conclusion, Ireland’s issuance of over 18,000 work permits in the first half of 2023, along with the revisions to the Atypical Working Scheme, reflects the nation’s commitment to fostering a diverse and skilled workforce while maintaining efficiency and fairness in its immigration processes. These developments are likely to further solidify Ireland’s reputation as a hub for global talent.

In a significant development for both Indian students and U.S.-India relations, the U.S. Embassy has recently granted approximately 90,000 F1 Visas to Indian students. This issuance, which predominantly occurred in July and August of 2023, marks a remarkable surge in the number of Indian students seeking higher education in the United States. This article explores the highlights of this visa issuance, shedding light on the implications and opportunities it presents for students, bilateral relations, and the future.

U.S. Ambassador’s Ambitious Vision

One of the most prominent announcements made in connection with this surge in visa issuances came from U.S. Ambassador Eric Garcetti. Ambassador Garcetti revealed ambitious plans to process a staggering 1 million visas in the year 2023. This declaration underscores the U.S. government’s commitment to fostering educational and cultural exchanges between the two nations. It not only demonstrates the attractiveness of U.S. educational institutions but also the nation’s eagerness to welcome international talent.

In-Country Renewability for H-1B Visas

In another significant policy shift, the United States has introduced in-country renewability for H-1B visas. This policy change eliminates the need for H-1B visa holders to leave the country in order to renew their visas. This is a substantial relief for Indian professionals working in the United States on H-1B visas, as it streamlines the renewal process and minimizes disruptions in their careers and personal lives. It is yet another example of the United States’ commitment to strengthening its ties with India and enhancing the ease of doing business and working in the country.

Expansion of Consulates: Strengthening Bilateral Ties

Bilateral relations between India and the United States have been on an upward trajectory in recent years, and this visa issuance is a testament to the growing partnership between the two nations. To further bolster these relations, new U.S. consulates are set to be established in Bengaluru and Ahmedabad. These consulates will facilitate a range of services, including visa processing, and provide a local touchpoint for residents of these cities who wish to interact with U.S. authorities. Additionally, a new Indian consulate is ready for setup in Seattle, further underscoring the commitment to expanding diplomatic missions in the respective countries.

Educational Opportunities in the United States

The issuance of 90,000 F1 Visas to Indian students underscores the continued appeal of U.S. universities and colleges to international students, especially those from India. The United States has long been a preferred destination for Indian students seeking high-quality education and diverse cultural experiences.

Indian students are drawn to U.S. institutions for several reasons:

  1. Academic Excellence: American universities consistently rank among the world’s top institutions, offering a wide range of programs and courses that cater to diverse interests and career aspirations.
  2. Research Opportunities: The United States is a global leader in research and innovation. Indian students are eager to tap into the vast research resources and opportunities available at U.S. universities.
  3. Diversity and Inclusivity: U.S. campuses are known for their diverse student bodies and inclusive environments. This multicultural exposure enriches the educational experience and prepares students for a globalized world.
  4. Post-Graduation Employment: The Optional Practical Training (OPT) program allows international students to work in the United States for up to three years after completing their degree, providing valuable international work experience.
  5. Networking and Career Opportunities: The United States offers extensive networking opportunities and access to a wide range of industries, making it an attractive destination for students looking to launch their careers.

Conclusion: A Win-Win for Education and Diplomacy

The issuance of 90,000 F1 Visas to Indian students is a landmark moment in U.S.-India relations. It not only reflects the enduring appeal of U.S. education but also highlights the commitment of both nations to fostering cultural and educational exchanges. As the United States continues to streamline its visa processing, expand consular services, and welcome international talent, Indian students have more reasons than ever to pursue their academic dreams in the United States. This surge in visa issuances is a testament to the power of education in strengthening diplomatic ties and fostering mutual understanding between nations. It is indeed a win-win for education and diplomacy, with far-reaching benefits for both Indian students and the United States.

In order to study in the UK, you will need to apply for a UK visa. This can be done online or by mail. You may also be able to get your visa without applying through a university or college.

If you are already enrolled in one of their courses and have been accepted into another degree program at an additional institution in England or Wales, then you can apply for the same.

Once your application is approved, it will take about three months before you become eligible for entry into the country as long as all necessary documentation is provided (e-visa). If there are any issues with submitting these documents properly or processing times exceed three months, then these extensions may not occur until after filing deadlines for applications end on October 31st(unless otherwise noted).

Can I study on a work visa in the UK?

The answer to the question, “can I study on a work visa in the UK?” is yes

There are several ways to study in the UK, and they all have their own advantages and disadvantages.

One thing to keep in mind is that although you can study in the UK with a UK work visa, this may not be true for other types of visas.

For example, if you are visiting the UK as a standard visitor, then you are not allowed to study in the UK. This is due to the visitor rules, which state that a visitor should not visit the UK with the “intend to study.”

Although you can study on a UK work visa, however, there are some restrictions that you need to be aware of before applying for this type of visa:

  • You must be sponsored by your employer and only work for them at their establishment.
  • You cannot change employers without permission.
  • You cannot work more than 20 hours per week during your stay in the UK as an overseas student or trainee. It is possible to apply for permission if this is going to be an exception, but it will cost extra money and time that could otherwise be spent furthering yourself financially or academically.
  • You cannot work in the UK for more than 4 months.
  • You cannot use your visa to study for more than 3 years.
  • You cannot switch from one course to another, so if you are studying medicine and want to switch over to the law, your visa will not allow this change of focus, and it must be done by switching courses as part of another degree (ex: BA/BSc vs. Master’s).

Another thing that you need to take care of is that if you were studying on a work visa before coming to the UK and want to change your visa type or residence status. Then you must apply for permission from HM Government before doing so (this includes changing from a student into self-employed).

This process is called switching from one visa type to another and requires that all previous conditions be met by meeting certain criteria set out by HM Government.

There are several routes for studying in the UK on a work visa

There are several routes for studying in the UK on a work visa. The UK Tier 2 visa is for skilled workers, while the UK Tier 4 visa is for students and post-study work visas are available to those who have graduated from a UK university or other qualifying institution.

The Post-Study Work Visa is also known as an ‘Exceptional Talent’ visa and allows you to come to the UK for up to 24 months with your employer if they offer you an employment contract that lasts at least 6 months after your arrival date.

You must be sponsored by an organization that has been approved by the Home Office under this scheme, which means it will take longer than other types of visas available on our website.

How can I extend my visa for my studies?

You can apply for an extension of your UK Tier 4 visa if you are studying at a UK university or if you have already completed your studies and would like to transfer them to another course.

You can also apply for a UK tier 2 visa extension if you are studying on a short-term basis in the UK, e.g., with Erasmus+. This includes students who have completed their studies but want to change their course of study or take up extra qualifications before returning home.

If you hold a valid student visa and wish to stay in the UK beyond three months (or six months if there is no limit), then it is worth considering applying for an extension as this will allow time for applications such as work permits and permanent residency cards etc.

How long do I have to wait between finishing one course and starting a new course?

You can start a new course straight away, but there are restrictions on how long you can take to complete it. You cannot do more than one course in the same subject within 6 months of the first (unless it is an approved period of time).

In this case, you can only use up to 3 months before starting another course in that subject.
